UVU Alert, Feb. 3, 2020, at 6:00 a.m.

UVU campuses will remain open today, and all classes are scheduled as usual. This decision was made based on both current and projected weather conditions provided by the National Weather Service. However, we understand that current conditions have made travel dangerous for some. Please take necessary precautions to stay safe, including taking advantage of mass-transit options where possible. We ask faculty and staff to work with students affected by the weather, and that departments accommodate faculty and staff unable to travel to campus.

  1. Stay safe out there, friends! I have already attended one memorial service too many for a UVU student in the past few days, and don't relish the idea of attending any others anytime soon. Please drive slower and wear your seat belt, or leave earlier and take Frontrunner/UTA for free with your UVU Student ID. See you on campus later this morning, safe and sound!

  2. Yes, please drive safely everyone.

  3. Kind of an unwise idea keeping the campus open. I would ask you to consider students who live further away and see that most news sources say to stay home because its so dangerous.

  4. Very irresponsible decision. UVU has faculty and students who commute much further than other community entities that are closed today for the safety of their students and employees. It puts the pressure on faculty who have not choice but to risk it as most don't have a substitute early in the morning. So sad to see money comes ahead of the safety of the students and faculty.

  5. Also consider that the UTA system is heavily impacted as well. There are 20-40 minute delays because of the weather. Just saying to use a student id and plan for extra time is ludicrous.

    1. I agree. Not to mention the fact that students have to drive to the station. Most students who take the Frontrunner live in Salt Lake County where conditions are much worse than around campus.

  6. Does UVU have access to a different weather service than the news stations and the school systems? Why the discrepancy?

  7. What a horrible, yet unsurprising decision. UVU decision makers are completely out of touch with reality. Keeping campus open and putting people at risk just to save a few bucks... Local school districts have closed for the day but apparently UVU uses different information and assumes its students use different roads.

  8. My commute to Salt Lake City which normally takes 45 minutes took over an hour and a half. The roads are very unsafe, the snow plows cannot keep up and I had to drive on about an inch of snow. The FrontRunner is behind by 30 minutes. This is not a safe decision.

  9. I'm new to UVU as of last fall. Where I moved from, when the public schools closed, the local college closed as well. This was for the SAFETY of the students and faculty. Why does UVU have different standards for safety than the schools when UVU students and faculty have a longer commute? I'm very disappointed in this very selfish decision.

  10. What exactly is this supposed to mean anyway: "We ask faculty and staff to work with students affected by the weather, and that departments accommodate faculty and staff unable to travel to campus"? How do we know we are "unable to travel"? Shall we call our department chair when we're in a ditch? Shall we ask for accommodations when we're dead along the road? How do we know until its too late?

  11. I question if UVU is really considering the safety of their students and staff, Many of whom travel from other cities. I am watching the news and seeing how unsafe the road conditions are and the announcement of the school districts and government agencies either choosing to delay or flat out canceling off the day. Provo School District, which is in UVU’s general area, has chosen to close recognizing that the road will probably get worse before they get better. This seems like an unwise decision. I am choosing to miss my classes and hopefully will get whatever notes on info I miss rather than white knuckling my way to Orem.

  12. The roads seem like there’s just a skiff of snow here in Orem close to UVU. I live quite close and could make it with little to no problems. The problem is my daughters school has closed for the day. So I do not have childcare. I may be bringing my kid to school today. 🤷🏼‍♀️

  13. I hope individual professors decide to cancel classes anyway and "veto" this is a way. Too many students AND professors commute to this school for this.

    1. Dani its not that simple. Individual professors do not have that right. The professors have no choice-its their job and what about the students that do show up? The students at least have the option to stay home and ask for an excused absence.

  14. I can just picture the executives at UVU making this decision..."Well its a Monday and that's our busiest day", "Well they can always take the train if they think driving is unsafe", "They can just stay home if they can't drive in". UGH! How short sighted and money hungry can we be UVU?

  15. For people with the title of "Dr." you sure don't have common sense. This is a very foolish decision. It is over two hours later and the weather sure hasn't changed. Was this for financial reasons? Who made the decision? Where did you get your information? Anyone can see thick ice on the roads, poor visibility, and severe winds. Makes you wonder how many "Doctors" are going to stay home while they subordinates feel pressured to go. Let's hope and pray that no one gets in a car accident or killed.

  16. I don't feel like this is a safe decision. I know I do not feel safe driving in this kind of weather. I just hope that everyone is safe.

  17. It is nearing three hours. Where is an update?

  18. Don't you think it's irresponsible for you people with the highest student body in the whole state to not give at least one snow day? Do you not realize that there are students and faculty who live in the salt county who have an 45 minute to an hour commute just to get to your university? I think your board should be held responsible if there are any major accidents on the highway to Orem being that you wanted to make money today instead of considering the safety of your students and faculty.

  19. Well I'm scared to death now. I live an hr away and I'd have to leave super early and spend so much time in this storm. Its sad that my job told us to not even try to come in and actually cares about our safety but my school doesnt. I don't think they understand that the tracks are behind because of the weather to. I hope my professor is more considerate than this. I hope students are safe and nothing bad happens.Scary!

  20. im disappointed every school district in the state has canceled school but uvu hasn’t ... my front runner train was supposed to leave at 8:30 & still hasn’t arrived. im going to get to school very late & miss my first class. this is totally unfair for you guys to do.

  21. One of my professors has already canceled class. I’m not going to school, this is ridiculous. it’s an hour and a half trip for me to get to school but with all the snow is going to be 2 1/2 hours. im so disappointed.!

  22. As a student without a car, I couldn't even get out of the building this morning. The wind outside froze me. Although I was not far from the school, I still had to walk 15 minutes. In this weather, you told me it was safe to go to school. I apologize to my professor because I will be absent for the day.

  23. The whole state is shut down except UVU. Really? Many faculty and students have a 20+ mile commute. Does the safety risk outweigh having to make a one day adjustment to a schedule?

  24. I am also a faculty member is very disappointed with this decision. Its not like the storm was a surprise. My 30 minute drive took an hour due to several accidents and being rerouted to side roads with poor visibility. There's no good excuse for UVU's decision and they should be accountable.

  25. Frontrunner train was over an hour late today. Stay home, and stay safe.

  26. I cant believe they still arent changing their minds. This is ridiculous and they are putting to many people in danger.

  27. It has been four hours and no weather change. Give an update.

  28. everybody complaining needs to chill out. The roads are NOT that bad (driven to school in 100x worse) and classes are still ongoing. They literally say to make a judgement call for yourself whether or not it is safe to come. Many teachers are cancelling their classes anyways. Actually, now considering many of you cannot drive in negligent weather don't come because you put others at risk texting and driving in snow.

    1. Who in their right mind is texting and driving in the snow? All of the people here are posting this stuff because they cant get in their cars and drive in the first place... I dont know where you got that from.

    2. I don't know ask the all people I've seen today texting and driving already

    3. Rude and unsympathetic. Probably a plant from UVU executive office who makes these decisions. Students stuck in a ditch don't need to "chill out". Do you know how bad the roads are Salt Lake, Saratoga, Payson? I kind of doubt it. What is in the world does texting have to do with any of this? If you don't have an intelligent comment, keep to yourself

  30. This should seriously be reconsidered. The University of Utah notified students last night that campus would be closed. I understand that Salt Lake County typically gets hit harder, but a good portion of the student body lives in Salt Lake County and the commute is much worse. The Frontrunner has major delays and has cancelled trains because of them (which doesn't happen very often which should speak to the conditions). I would say for such extreme conditions that closing the campus for one day is reasonable.
